The GTECH104 is a multi-functional business telephone that uses a SIM card to make and receive calls instead of plugging into a traditional telephone line.  The GTECH 104 is essentially a mobile phone in the guise of a deskphone.

There are many GSM Desk Phones available in the UK and many are used for telesales, temporary office, security and Taxi Phones, but the GTECH 104 provides additional features that make it ideal for use as a single communications device for a small office or temporary or remote office such as a construction site office.  The GTECH104 can connect to additional extension phones using the built-in DECT wireless capabilities and also acts as a WiFi hotspot to enable PC and laptop users to connect to share 3G mobile broadband connectivity.

The GTECH 104 is priced at around £250.00 for the base unit so is more expensive than standard GSM Desk Phones such as the DPH500 but is an all rounder and is sure to find a loyal following in the UK.

The 3G Router Store has increased it’s range of UMTS and 3G Antennas to provide a greater choice for customers purchasing 3G routers such as the Raven XE.

We were recently asked about the Vodafone policy about using Vodafone SIM cards with GSM gateways.  In the Vodafone contract and on their website they state :-

“GSM Gateway Commercial Policy

A GSM Gateway is any equipment containing a SIM card which enables the routing of calls from fixed apparatus to mobile equipment by establishing a mobile to mobile call.

In view of the uncertainty over the legality of certain types of GSM Gateways, Vodafone’s policy is not to accept applications for the operation of GSM Gateways on its network. Customers should be aware that where a GSM Gateway is connected to the Vodafone network in breach of this policy, Vodafone has and will continue to disconnect SIM cards that it believes are being used illegally.”

This would suggest that Vodafone, apart from not being able to interpret some pretty basic legal ruling from Ofcom, will not under any circumstances accept or tolerate a Vodafone SIM card to be used in a device that will allow a fixed telephone device, such as a telephone to be used on their network.

If this is truly the case then why do they continue to offer the Vodafone B970 3G Router that contains a telephone port that you can connect a telephone and make voice calls – this is in fact acting as a GSM Gateway so any Vodafone SIM card used in this unit that has been used for a voice call should be terminated. 

Why are they also offering GSM Fax numbers becuase how else will a SIM card be able to receive faxes without the use of a GSM Fax Terminal that you can connect a fax machine to.  The same sort of single SIM GSM Gateway terminal used by thousands of companies with temporary or remote sites that rely on mobile phone communications.

I hope that Vodafone is able to provide some clarity as to their business policy as it does not make sense to us and many of their customers.

Fax over GSM is not a new concept, with the service being available in the UK since 1994.  The GSM Fax service really took off in the UK in 1996 when Nokia launched the Nokia 9000 Communicator, which enabled the user of this early smartphone to receive and view faxes on it’s LCD display.  The Nokia 9000 could also enable the user to type a fax and send it to a normal fax machine.

Since then the GSM Fax service offered by the mobile phone networks has not changed a great deal becuase it is such a bsic service offering – the only slight improvement has been the availability of GSM Fax Terminals such as the telecom FM Cellfax Plus.  A SIM Card is inserted into the Cellfax unit which then provides a connection to enable a standard analogue fax machine to be conected to enable faxes to be sent and received just like using a standard PSTN analogue telephone line.

This means tht temporary or mobile offices can still take advantage of the GSM Fax service offered by the mobile phone networks, providing convenience for when you really do need to send or receive a fax in this age of e-mail.  GSM Fax terminals are widely used by construction companies and are finding an increased use aboard ships and other marine work and pleasure craft.
