Huawei B525 CAT6 4G Router Replaces E5186 CAT6 4G Router

Huawei have announced that the E5186 CAT6 LTE 4G Router is now end of life and the replacement is the new Huawei B525 CAT6 4G Router.

Using a slightly smaller case than the E5186, the Huawei B525s-23a embedded CAT6 4G Router offers similar functionality with 4 x Gigabit Ethernet Ports and 802.11AC WiFi for wired and wireless device connectivity and the high speed CAT6 LTE 4G modem inside providing high speed 4G mobile Internet connectivity.

Teltonika RUT500 3G Router Reduced To £82.00

The RUT500 includes a 3G keep alive feature called ping reboot that is configured to ping an IP address on the Internet, something like Google public DNS server and if the router does not get a response then it will reboot and re-establish the 3G connection.  This sort of feature is needed because 3G and 4G services are an always available service and not an always on service.

This Ping Reboot feature makes the Teltonika RUT500 ideal for M2M (Machine To Machine) applications that need a reliable 3G connection – after all there is no point relying on a 3G connection for remote monitoring and management if you need to drive to site every week to turn your router off and on to get it to reconnect to the mobile network.  This is why many M2M installations that want to use a 3G or 3G connection will use an M2M type router rather than rely on a cheaper router and USB Modem set up.

The Teltonika RUT500 also has an extra resilience feature called SMS Reboot so you can send the RUT500 an SMS message to get it to reboot or to send an SMS with the router status or to switch the 3G connection on or off.

EE-pimped eco-tractor to provide 4G at Glastonbury

Glastonbury festival-goers will be able to log on to a Wi-Fi hotspot at the event’s campsite with the help of some converted farm equipment, reports telegraph.co.uk.

The “EE-pimped eco-tractor” will drive around all weekend, sharing internet access using 4G technology, with people able to track where the vehicle is by following the @EE Twitter account.

Spencer McHugh, brand director at the mobile network, said: “We couldn’t be more excited about this year’s Glastonbury where we will be installing the first ever superfast 4G network at a UK festival to help those on site stay connected.”

He also mentioned how the tractor idea follows in the footsteps of the 4G cabs stunt which the company carried out earlier this year. In terms of the tractor, people within ten metres of the machine should be able to get on to the internet.

EE was the first network in the UK to offer 4G services and is keen to encourage more users to upgrade to 4G sims in the future. The technology allows much faster internet speeds.

Glastonbury, which runs from Wednesday June 26th to Sunday June 30th this year, is considered to be the largest greenfield festival in the world, according to bbc.co.uk. This year’s event site at Worthy Farm in Pilton is 900 acres, with a perimeter of 8.5 miles. All 135,000 tickets for the 2013 edition sold out in under 2 hours.

Trials of the new 4G platform have confirmed that it will not disrupt Freeview digital television signals, despite initial fears, itproportal.com reports.

Tests performed by at800, a group created by Three, Vodafone, EE and O2, discovered that activating the masts did not interfere with Freeview outputs. A trial carried out across parts of west and south London in April resulted in not one single complaint.

There had been concerns that activating the masts would have an adverse impact – or ‘TV apocalypse’ as some have termed it – due to the ‘close proximity of the 800MHZ LTE (4G) frequency to the UK’s Freeview signal’. However, a second trial in the West Midlands had the same positive outcome – which is great news for 4G operators and homeowners keen to install 4G routers.

Speaking specifically about the London test, at800 chief executive Simon Beresford-Wylie said: “London is a big and important market for 4G services and also has millions of Freeview viewers. Clearly it was essential for the broadcasters and the mobile operators that we run trials in London before a roll-out of 4G at 800MHz.

“Whilst it seems unlikely that there will be issues for the vast majority of television viewers in the capital, we will remain alert to any possible interference when roll-out commences.”

A further is taking place currently across the far hillier terrain of Brighton, according to bbc.co.uk. Though a ‘handful of issues’ have been highlighted so far, should the test ultimately prove successful, then the 4G roll-out could take place in the summer.

Samsung reveals 5G breakthrough – though not until 2020

With many mobile device users in the UK looking to upgrade their phones to accept 4G sims in order to take advantage of super-fast connectivity, technology manufacturer Samsung has announced a breakthrough in 5G.

However, those thinking of putting off an upgrade in favour of 5G will be waiting a very long time as Samsung has estimated the technology will not become public until at least 2020.

Furthermore, theinquirer.net believes it could even be a much longer wait given the 13 years that separated 3G and 4G connectivity, making it unlikely that 5G will become available for UK consumers ‘within the next decade’.

Nevertheless, Samsung’s claims to have successfully developed its 5G network with 1Gbps speed, reaching a potential 10Gbps. This means users could potentially download an entire movie in less than one second.

Overall, 5G networks could allow “a wide range of services such as 3D movies and games, real-time streaming of ultra high-definition content and remote medical services,” claims the firm.

Samsung commented on the new network to telegraph.co.uk: “Samsung’s latest innovation is expected to invigorate research into 5G cellular communications across the world.

“The company believes it will trigger the creation of international alliances and the timely commercialisation of related mobile broadband services,” it added.

EE delivers 4G to an additional 12 towns

Telecommunications firm EE has rolled out 4G to an additional 12 towns, bringing the number of cities and towns covered to 62.

Reported by imore.com, the latest towns to receive 4G coverage are Aylesbury, Berkhamsted, Billericay, Blackpool, Brentwood, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Lytham St Annes, Marlow, Pontefract, Thame and Windsor.

Now, EE claims that more than half of the UK’s population is covered by its 4G service. Furthermore, it has reiterated its desire to launch 4G services across the whole UK – those with 4G sims in a further 18 towns will be able to access 4G in June, bringing the total coverage to at least 80.

By the end of the year, EE wants 70 per cent of the UK to be able to access 4G, adds t3.com.

Olaf Swantee, chief executive of EE, commented on the rollout: “Consumers and businesses in the UK use mobile internet more than any other market and rely on it for long commutes. We’re committed to rolling out 4G to 98 per cent of the population by the end of 2014.”

Furthermore, EE will also be upgrading its 4G network to operate at speeds of 100Mbps and higher over the next year to ensure that it doesn’t fall behind when other UK telcos start to roll out their own respective networks.

4G users spend more online thanks to faster speeds

Consumers with 4G mobile devices are more likely to spend more online as a result of their faster connections, thedrum.com reports.

A new study by eDigitalResearch and IMRG found that a third of 4G users have claimed they are ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to make more purchases on their mobile devices thanks to their quick internet speeds.

The research, which involved quizzing 2,000 consumers, found that 77 per cent of those with 4G connectivity had already used their devices whilst out shopping, to check prices, availability or read reviews. Tellingly, this figure was at just 53 per cent for those with only a 3G connection.

Elsewhere, the study also found that users of 4G were also more tech-savvy and more engaged with developments in the mobile world than their 3G-using peers. It also found that 14 per cent of all mobiles now came with 4G sims, although not all of them are currently in use.

The usage and effectiveness of 4G was also considered, with the result that 82 per cent of those surveyed who’d used 4G claimed it made browsing ‘faster’ or ‘considerably faster’.

Commenting on the findings, commercial director at eDigitalResearch, Derek Eccleston told ichannel.com: “The introduction of 4G technology looks set to have a considerable impact on retail markets.

“With faster internet speeds and a better all-round browsing experience, more and more shoppers are likely to turn to their 4G-enabled device to help them through their multichannel purchase journey. Whilst the thought of this might scare some, brands need to embrace this next step of the mobile revolution and ensure that their entire end-to-end customer journey across all channels is set for more mobile.”

BT enters the 4G race in surprise U-turn

British Telecom has begun searching for a new telecoms partner, following a surprise U-turn on its mobile ambitions.

The BT group snagged £200 million worth of the 4G spectrum in the recent auction, but at the time said that they had no intention of entering the mobile communications market. Instead, it was believed that BT would use the spectrum to bolster their national Wi-Fi hotspot network, perhaps giving customers a 4G router.

However, the telecoms giant has now begun a tender for an operator to provide mobile services to BT customers. While the tender is open to all the operators it is widely expected that O2 will be the preferred bidder.

O2 was originally owned by BT but was sold off to Telefonica in 2005. O2 failed to win any of the 2.6GHz spectrum that BT bought, which is why industry insiders believe that a deal could be done.
Talking to FT.com, a BT spokesman said: “We won some excellent 4G spectrum just recently so it makes sense for us to explore the new opportunities that 4G presents.”

Sam Gibbs of Gizmodo.co.uk speculated that BT could well bundle 4G services with its broadband package which would make it a very tempting overall offer for many consumers and businesses alike.

British businesses urged to prepare for arrival of 4G

British businesses have been urged to do more to prepare for the arrival of 4G.

Sean Duffy, who is head of technology at Barclays Bank, has claimed that the arrival of super-fast internet in the UK will encourage even more consumers to shop online using mobile devices.

In an interview with bmmagazine.co.uk, he encouraged businesses to prepare for the proliferation of 4G routers by ensuring their website is fully-optimised for mobile devices.

He said: “We’re already seeing a growing trend for consumers to browse on their mobile or tablet rather than their PC and while the introduction of 4G networks is unlikely to cause technical problems for online businesses, it is likely to accelerate this trend.

“Companies that are already prepared for consumers to use their sites from a mobile device stand to gain a significant competitive advantage. It isn’t enough to simply replicate the big screen PC experience for mobile devices.”

According to cable.co.uk, Duffy was reacting to research that suggested nine out of ten online businesses were yet to optimise their website for mobile devices. That’s despite over a third of businesses reporting growth in mobile traffic since the turn of the year.

The research, conducted by Barclays, revealed that more than half of Brits bought a product online using a mobile device last year.

EE still running the 4G market

EE is still running the 4G market, with a company prediction that there will be one million 4G customers by the end of the year.

The mobile phone network has announced that 318,000 people are currently running their super fast mobile broadband service. Around 1,600 medium and large businesses have also signed up, according to ibtimes.co.uk.

EE has released financial results for the first quarter of 2013 and claimed last month that it wanted to reach the big one million this year. With O2, Vodafone and Three all hot on its heels to offer 4G sims in the next few months, competition could be stiff.

Chief Financial Officer of EE, Neal Milson said: “Today’s results are in line with our expectations, and we are making good progress focusing on high value segments.

“We expect to strengthen our industry leadership position in the year ahead as the 4G roll out continues and we introduce double-speed 4GEE.”

Sky.com reports that this is the first time the network has released any subscriber numbers, since it launched the service in November 2012.  Average speeds are expected to reach 20Mbps in ten different cities by the end of June, according to company predictions.

EE has around 27 million customers and expects to have 4G coverage for 70 per cent of the population by the end of the year.
