SIP Trunking On The Rise.

The use of SIP Trunking by small and medium sized businesses in the UK has risen dramatically over the last twelve months compared to the previous three years data.  The rise in SIP Trunk usage in the UK has been driven by the change in business phone system technologies that have been implemented by the leading phone system manufacturers such as Panasonic, Avaya and Siemens.  New communications platforms from these leading systems providers such as the Panasonic NS1000 have focused heavily on SIP technology and promote the use of both IP Telephones for extensions and SIP Trunking to replace traditional PSTN Analogue, ISDN2e and ISDN30e telephone lines.

The move to SIP trunking has not yet been driven by pricing or service except in the case of new installations where the cost of installing multiple SIP Trunking channels is far cheaper and quicker than analogue or ISDN phone lines.  SIP Trunk channel rental combined with the cost of using a dedicated broadband service to deliver high quality VoIP calls will usually cost the same as renting the equivalent number of PSTN or ISDN telephone lines, and the typical call charges for using a VoIP service compared to normal phone lines are usually the same.

During 2011, there were 127 new suppliers of SIP Trunk providers in the UK compared to only 32 new SIP Trunking providers in 2010 and this should help drive down the price, provide new innovation and improve quality.

The increase in SIP Trunking has also promted a new range of VoIP Gateway products that will enable business users to utilise SIP Trunks without changing their existing analogue or ISDN phone system.  A VoIP Gateway will connect to the phone system trunk ports and provide conversion of these traditional telephone technologies to VoIP so that businesses can take advantage of the VoIP revolution.  Oneproduct that does just this is the Onestream VoIP Gateway that provides PSTN and ISDN2e connectivity for SIP Trunking as well as providing two built-in GSM channels to enable low cost calls to mobile phones, as well as offering mobile extension capabilities and the connection of IP Phones to provide extra capacity in the office or for homeworkers.

On-demand phone service for UK startups launched

Having worked together previously and sharing a passion for Internet communications, Kevin and I have teamed up again after identifying a gap in the UK market for a phone service tailored specifically for home-based startups and entrepreneurs.

SipcentricThe launch of our new ‘on-demand’ phone service marks the beginning of a new era of telephony services for business people. A virtual phone system from Sipcentric can instantly make a small business sound more professional yet requires no commitment whatsoever and is remarkably easy to start using.

Traditionally, if someone required a second line to be installed in their home for their new business, they would have to pay for installation, wait around 2 weeks for it to be installed and then pay rental of around £10-15 per month for a minimum of 12 months. Not ideal, as many new businesses need to remain flexible, and portable, particularly in the early months.

Or they could sign up for one of the many hosted VoIP services around. Most of these seem to assume the user is already familiar with VoIP or that they are technically savvy. These, too, tend to come with setup charges and minimum contracts, although the rental costs are typically lower than their traditional counterparts.

Our exciting new service is ideal for those who have heard about the benefits of VoIP but either don’t know where to start or wish to try it out without committing themselves to long term contracts or paying for features they really don’t need. Anyone can sign up for an account for free via our website and take a look around the system, watching the tutorial videos and getting to know their way around.

When they are ready to get started, they can start to add features on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis. Rental is paid monthly at the beginning of each month until the feature is removed. A feature can be removed at any time prior to the end of the month and we will not charge for it again. It really is that simple.

Users can start with a single phone extension which can be used anywhere in the world from just £3 per month plus VAT. They can add a UK telephone number from almost any area code, instantly, and send calls to different places depending on the time of day from just £2 plus VAT.

By providing business owners with an on-demand, instantly adaptable system with which to professionally handle their calls, we aim to establish ourselves as the only provider fully committed to enabling startups and small businesses to grow their communications in their own way and without barriers.

Our service has been created by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs. We know the challenges faced by small business owners. Therefore, our customers can rely on us to provide a personal service with awesome support and 100% belief in what we do.

IP Genie moves to centre stage

The global economic downturn has increased the urgency among companies of all sizes to reduce costs and find smarter and more efficient ways to do business. From our perspective, this imperative is moving VoIP and open-source telecom solutions, like IPGENIE UCP, to centre stage.

Clearly, the march to VoIP – among customers and carriers – began before the current worldwide economic crisis. Still, for us and other VoIP providers business is brisk as more and more companies rush to implement VoIP solutions. Enterprise customers in growing numbers are turning to VoIP for inter-branch, intra-company calling while more and more call centre’s, hotels and SMBs (small and mid-sized businesses) rely on it for all inbound and outbound international calls.

Another smarter, less expensive way to do business is open-source telephony – specifically, IPGENIE UCP. So far this year, we’ve noted increased awareness and acceptance of IPGENIE UCP among customers in England & Northern Ireland We’ve even seeing PBX procurements by multinational companies where IPGENIE is being considered side-by-side with Cisco and Avaya.

The reason is simple: IPGENIE is a flexible, scalable and reliable solution that offers the same advanced features and functionality as proprietary PBXs but at a fraction of the cost. For these reasons, IPGENIE now has a seat at the table.

In Europe, we’re also seeing keen interest in IPGENIE but for one additional reason: the large, installed base of Nortel PBX. For many years, Nortel was the PBX that many installed for customers throughout the country. Many of these switches are at or near the end of the product’s life-cycle. Compounding the normal anxiety over switch replacement is Nortel’s bankruptcy filing earlier this year. In the meantime, customers are worried about replacement parts upgrades and service and many of them are turning to IPGENIE.

We expect an even stronger second half of the year in IP PBX. In any case, we believe VoIP is moving to centre stage and IPGENIE is right behind it.

SIP TRUNK vs ISDN

How does a SIP Trunk service really compare to ISDN in terms of cost, quality and reliability?

Below are two comparisons between SIP Trunks and ISDN Telephone Lines, showing both installation and ongoing rental charges.  The first comparison is an example using 4 channels of ISDN2e with 20 DDI Numbers, typical of a small business user in the 4-12 extension marketplace.  The second comparison uses the example of a larger business using 30 channels of ISDN30e with 200 DDI Numbers.

In our experience, call charges between SIP Trunks and ISDN lines are very similar, after all the calls are being carried by the same tier one carriers so will all be subject to the same core costs so for the purposes of our comparison we are only showing the costs of installation and rental.  Our comparison is based upon using a business grade SIP Trunk service provider with high quality broadband services to provide near ISDN call quality and reliability, against ISDN lines provided by a competitive service provider ie. not BT.
