The Ontario government has put out a request for proposals to expand broadband internet to the rural areas of Waterloo Region.
$11.9 million is being made available through the expansion plan.
The announcement was made Thursday by Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris and Cambridge MPP Belinda Karahalios, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
“I’ve heard loud and clear from my constituents how important broadband access is for individuals, families, and businesses in rural areas,” Harris said in a release. “Today’s announcement demonstrates the current provincial government and Minister Hardeman’s commitment to expand fast and reliable internet in those areas right here in Waterloo Region.”
“Now, more than ever, we see how important access to fast and reliable internet is for individuals, families, and businesses,” added Karahalios, who says the announcement means a great deal for those in her riding and across southwestern Ontario.
The province says the contract will be awarded shortly after the RFP closes on October 2.
Last week, the Ford government announced it would invest $150 million in reliable broadband and cellular service.
