New Delhi: The telecom regulator is considering starting an industry-wide discussion on improving speed and reliability of broadband connectivity, as well as strengthening the digital infrastructure, amid a growing remote work culture in wake of the pandemic.
“The authority is considering initiating a consultation on ways to increase high speed and reliable broadband connectivity,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman RS Sharma told ET, adding that back-end “digital infrastructure creation is another area of priority.” Trai data showed mobile broadband speeds during March-April fell sequentially as data demand surged.
As per industry estimates, data demand increased 20% since the pandemic broke out. “As we practice social distancing and self-quarantine, the only way to maintain a semblance of normalcy is to connect remotely,” said Sharma, adding that high-speed and reliable broadband was crucial.
